Sentimental Quilt

I had a comment on my blog about the hand quilt so I thought I'd tell you a bit about it as it is a very special one to me.
In February 2002 because of bad choices from a family member we became guardians of my niece and 2 nephews. It happened fast. We had a senior in high school, one in college and looked forward to being empty nesters. Life doesn't always follow a set plan.  I was in a bit of a twister for a while. Some good quilter friends came to the rescue with a quilt to wrap their love around me. Sometimes we think of a quilt as cotton fabric sewn together. In the midst of a crisis it was so much more.
I treasure this quilt and remember fondly the memories we made with my 5 kids for the 5 years we had them.
This was our first summer together. The youngest will be a junior in high school!!

P.S. June is starting with a BANG, so my posts and replies will be sporadic.

  7. Sometimes we are handed a new script to our lives whether we want it or not. That must have been a daunting thing to face, but you made a difference in the lives of those kids, I'm sure. What a meaningful quilt your friends made for you--just at a time that you needed to feel that extra strength and support. I applaud you, your husband, and your friends!

  8. How wonderful for those children that you and your family were able to help them in what must have been a traumatic time in their lives, and how wonderful of your friends to show their love and support for you in taking on such a big challenge. I always like hearing the back story about quilts -- and this one really is special.

  10. Thank you for sharing. I wondered about the quilt when I saw it in your one picture. I like that it is in red, white, and blues.
My daughter and husband took in a step-niece a few years ago to keep her out of another round of foster care due to the mother's poor life choices. The girl will be a senior this year. Some rough times but a much better life for her.

  23. life is good at throwing us those curve balls just when we least expect it and that's when we most need "a little help" from our friends . . . this quilt is a great reminder of that.

    hope all is well.
